I would say the best way to learn French is to do an immersion course. By immersion course I mean go to a country where French is spoken (France, Belgium, Switzerland or Canada for example) and do an intensive course. If possible stay on after the course has finished or if you are doing the course part time then try to get a job. This will help to build on the knowledge you received in the course.

Of course this takes time which is not always suitable for most people. Ideal times are when you are in between things. Maybe you have quit your job and can set some time aside for learning French in France. Typically school students will do this in the year between leaving school and starting college.

The more you get involved in the life outside the academic course, the faster your knowledge of the language will become. Working in a simple job for instance will consolidate many of the words and verbs you have learned and make them stay in your head.

So why is immersion learning so effective ?

I think there are two reasons. The first being that you have to talk French. Nobody will speak your language so this focuses your mind on learning and speaking the language. You can't be concerned with sounding silly or even being initially misunderstood. All the trivial excuses you might make if you where learning the language in your native land fall away.

The second reason is that your learning seems so much more real. You can use your learning immediately rather than filing it away for a vacation in a few years time. The sights and sounds make it so much more real and this makes it easier to understand things that may be vague if you learned then in a book.

Doing a French immersion course is the best way to learn French in my opinion, however it is no idle undertaking. It will come at a considerable cost in both time and money. This may not suit everyone or even be practical for some lifestyles. Other ways to learn French include doing a night course or a home study course.
